Google Unveils AI-Powered Personal Health Coach for Fitbit

3 Min Read

At its Made by Google event, the company announced a new AI-powered personal health coach for Fitbit, built with its advanced Gemini model. The new feature is designed to act as an all-in-one fitness trainer, sleep coach, and wellness advisor.

Key Highlights

This new feature integrates advanced AI directly into the user’s daily health routine:

  • AI Model: The coach is built with Google’s powerful Gemini AI.
  • Rollout: A preview will be available in October as part of the Fitbit Premium subscription.
  • Compatibility: It will be accessible in the redesigned Fitbit app for the latest Fitbit trackers, smartwatches, and Pixel Watches.
  • Hyper-Personalization: The coach adapts workout and sleep plans based on user goals, preferences, and real-time biometric data from their device.

A Dynamic and Adaptive Fitness Plan

The AI coach allows users to create custom fitness routines by chatting about their goals, preferences, and available equipment. Based on this conversation, the AI builds a personalized plan with specific workout suggestions and targets.

Crucially, the coach adapts in real time. For example, if a user wakes up with a low readiness score after a night of poor sleep, the coach will proactively suggest changes to their weekly plan to help them recover. Users can also inform the coach of issues like an injury to receive an adjusted workout plan on the fly.

Personalized Sleep and Wellness Insights

Beyond fitness, the AI coach will analyze sleep patterns to provide insights on how to improve sleep quality over time, using advanced algorithms to better understand sleep duration and stages. It can also create a personalized sleep schedule that adapts to daily activity levels to help users determine how much sleep they truly need.

Users can also ask the coach direct, science-backed questions, such as, “Should I get an extra hour of sleep or work out tomorrow?” or “What are the best exercises for weight loss?”

Looking Ahead: The Future of AI in Personal Health

The new AI coach will be housed within a completely redesigned Fitbit app, which Google has reimagined with coaching and AI at its core. For the MENA region, a personalized AI health coach could be particularly impactful, with the potential to be tailored for specific needs like offering nutrition and fitness advice during Ramadan or adapting workout suggestions to local climate conditions for outdoor activities. To help guide the product’s development, Google also announced it is bringing on NBA star Stephen Curry as a “performance advisor”.
