In a significant move for Saudi Arabia’s technology and industrial sectors, global tech giant Lenovo is nearing completion of one of its largest and most advanced manufacturing facilities in Riyadh. The project, a strategic partnership with ALAT, a subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund (PIF), marks a major expansion for the company in the region and a substantial boost to the Kingdom’s local manufacturing capabilities.
A Strategic Partnership for Industrial Transformation
The new facility is being developed in collaboration with ALAT, a PIF-backed company dedicated to transforming Saudi Arabia into a global hub for sustainable technology manufacturing. This partnership underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to diversifying its economy and building a robust industrial base. Lenovo’s Chief Financial Officer, Winston Cheng, highlighted that the plant will be the company’s “most comprehensive” facility globally, integrating multiple production lines in a single location. The project follows the finalisation of a $2 billion investment deal announced earlier this year.
A Comprehensive ‘Made In Saudi’ Production Hub
Located at Riyadh Integrated, a site managed by the Special Integrated Logistics Zone (SILZ), the factory spans an impressive 200,000 square metres. Once fully operational, it is set to produce millions of desktops, laptops, and servers, all bearing the ‘Made in Saudi Arabia’ label. This will not only cater to the regional market but also position the Kingdom as a key player in the global technology supply chain.
Rapid Progress and Regional Ambitions
The project is advancing at a remarkable pace, with construction nearing completion and approximately 2,000 employees already hired within just nine months. Pilot production tests are scheduled to begin in December, with full-scale commercial operations expected to launch in the second half of next year. Further cementing its commitment to the region, Lenovo has also relocated its Middle East headquarters from the UAE to Riyadh and plans to establish accompanying research and development centres.
Setting a Benchmark for Sustainable Manufacturing
Designed to the highest sustainability standards, the facility is a model for environmentally conscious industrial development. It will feature 12 megawatts of rooftop solar panels, reflecting a strong commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. Lenovo aims for the Riyadh plant to serve as a regional benchmark for low-cost, sustainable manufacturing, aligning perfectly with Saudi Arabia’s green initiatives.
