Omani startup EnviBrick has introduced a groundbreaking construction technology at the Green Build Oman 2025 event, unveiling engineered bricks designed to address one of the region’s most significant challenges: high energy consumption in buildings. The innovation aims to set a new standard for sustainable construction practices in Oman and the wider Gulf.
Mohamed Alderiy, Founder of EnviBrick, emphasized the role of local innovation in meeting national sustainability targets. He stated that the company is “not just producing bricks, but creating a new construction technology” specifically tailored for the demanding climatic conditions of the MENA region.
Tapping a $66 Billion Green Building Market
EnviBrick is entering a rapidly expanding sector. Alderiy highlighted market data from Mordor Intelligence, which projects the GCC green building market to grow from $35.8 billion in 2024 to approximately $66.8 billion by 2029, representing a compound annual growth rate of nearly 11 percent.
This surge creates a significant opportunity for locally developed, competitively priced materials that can help developers reduce the carbon footprint of their projects.
Engineered for Efficiency and Strength
The core of EnviBrick’s innovation lies in its ability to combat heat transfer, a major driver of energy usage. In Oman, over 60% of a building’s energy consumption is for air conditioning, with around 65% of this demand attributed to heat penetrating the structure. EnviBrick’s engineered bricks are designed to minimize this heat transfer while maintaining a lightweight profile, directly reducing the need for cooling and lowering long-term energy costs.
The technical specifications demonstrate the product’s high performance. Manufactured from recycled materials, the bricks have strong eco-friendly credentials. The load-bearing blocks achieve a compressive strength of 36 MPa, while the non-load-bearing blocks reach 16 MPa, surpassing many conventional alternatives. In addition to their structural integrity, the bricks provide superior thermal and sound insulation.
Broader Economic and Environmental Impact
Alderiy explained that the benefits extend beyond simple energy savings. By reducing cooling demand, EnviBrick helps lower a building’s carbon emissions over its entire lifecycle. Furthermore, the enhanced energy efficiency can lead to higher long-term property values.
The startup, which began as a university-led initiative, is now transitioning towards commercial readiness. By aligning advanced material science with the region’s climatic needs, EnviBrick is positioning itself as a key Omani contributor to the future of sustainable construction in the Gulf.
