MENA Founders Must Prioritize Company-Market Fit Says Silicon Badia Partner

3 Min Read

In a landscape marked by rapid technological disruption and economic shifts, MENA founders are being urged to recalibrate their strategies for long-term survival and success. Hossam Shafick, a Partner at the global venture capital firm Silicon Badia, shared his perspective on the essential priorities for regional startups navigating today’s volatile market.

The Rise of Company-Market Fit

Shafick argues that the traditional milestone of product-market fit is no longer sufficient. With markets evolving faster than ever due to AI, geopolitical instability, and fluctuating capital cycles, a static product can quickly become irrelevant. The focus, he suggests, must shift to achieving “company-market fit.”

“The companies that win are those who have company-market fit; ones built to adapt as an organization—its hiring, sales channels, product roadmap, and pricing—must be flexible and capable of evolving quickly as the market moves,” Shafick stated. “The real advantage today is not just the product you build, but how quickly your company can reshape itself around the market.”

Strategic Capital Deployment

With capital becoming more expensive and investors more cautious, Shafick emphasizes the need for fiscal discipline. He advises founders to have absolute clarity on the purpose of any fundraising round, ensuring that capital is used as a growth accelerant, not a lifeline for an unproven model.

“Every dollar will matter more now than ever,” he noted. “Capital should only fuel something that already works—a proven sales motion, a repeatable customer segment, or a clear path to scale. If the engine is not working yet, more fuel will not fix it.”

Building Trust as a Strategic Asset

In uncertain times, relationships and trust become invaluable currency. Shafick highlights that when conviction is low, investors, partners, and employees will rally behind founders they trust. This trust is not built overnight but is cultivated over time through consistent transparency and honest communication.

“In volatile environments, capital becomes cautious, and conviction becomes scarce,” Shafick explained. “That trust is built long before difficult moments arrive… Founders who invest in them early will always have more options when the environment tightens.”
