Abu Dhabi Scales Level 4 Autonomous Taxi Operations on Yas Island With Apollo Go and AutoGo

4 Min Read

The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), operating under Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipalities and Transport, is officially moving its autonomous mobility ambitions from the testing phase into commercial reality. The government body has announced a major expansion of its self-driving taxi fleet on Yas Island, bringing in new local and international operators to manage the next phase of its smart city strategy.

Quick Facts

  • Transitioning to commercial Level 4 autonomous taxi services.

  • Apollo Go and AutoGo join as fleet operators.

  • Service expanding to Al Reem and Al Saadiyat soon.

Shifting From Trials to Commercial Level 4 Operations

Following a series of successful operational trials on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi is now transitioning to commercial deployment for Level 4 autonomous vehicles. This classification means the vehicles can operate entirely without human intervention within specific geofenced areas.

The phased rollout aligns with the emirate’s broader objective to build an integrated and sustainable transport network. By solidifying the operational framework, Abu Dhabi is positioning itself as a reliable testing and deployment hub for global mobility companies.

Future expansion plans are already in motion. The ITC has confirmed that the autonomous taxi service will soon extend beyond Yas Island to cover high-traffic residential and commercial zones, specifically targeting Al Reem Island, Al Maryah Island, and Al Saadiyat Island.

Securing Fleet Operators and App-Based Bookings

To support the expansion, the ITC has brought on specialized autonomous mobility operators. The network now involves Apollo Go, the self-driving subsidiary of Chinese tech giant Baidu, alongside Autogo, a local operator operating as a subsidiary of K2.

Passengers on Yas Island can currently request self-driving rides directly through their smartphones. The public service is accessible via the dedicated ‘AutoGo’ application, available on both Android and Apple devices.

Building the UAE’s Smart Mobility Ecosystem

The addition of multiple operators highlights the ITC’s focus on maintaining strict safety and efficiency standards while scaling public transit options. The Smart and Autonomous Systems Council has prioritized operational readiness to ensure that both the software and physical infrastructure can handle commercial public use.

Hamad Adel Al Afeefi, Executive Director of the Intelligent Transportation Systems Sector at ITC, noted the importance of this regulatory milestone.

“The addition of a new operator in the commercial operation of autonomous taxis is a key step in regulating and developing Abu Dhabi’s smart mobility ecosystem,” said Al Afeefi.

“It reflects the readiness of the regulatory and operational frameworks for Level 4 autonomous vehicles and adherence to safety and efficiency standards.”
