Egypt’s MSMEDA Channels $357M into 934,000 Women-Led Enterprises to Boost Economic Growth

3 Min Read

The Egyptian government is placing substantial capital behind female entrepreneurship, with the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency (MSMEDA) reporting an allocation of EGP 18.7 billion ($357 million) to women-led businesses. Representing 45% of the agency’s total financing between July 2014 and December 2025, the capital deployment targets sustainable job creation and structural economic support for female founders across the country.

Quick Facts

  • $357 million allocated to women-led projects since 2014.
  • Supported 934,000 female-managed businesses across multiple Egyptian sectors.
  • Created approximately 1.3 million direct jobs for local workers.

Driving Job Creation and Economic Inclusion in Egypt

The massive funding initiative underscores a deliberate national strategy to scale female participation in the economy. MSMEDA CEO Bassel Rahmy confirmed that the capital reached 934,000 projects operating in Egypt’s agricultural, industrial, service, and commercial sectors.

Beyond direct capital injections, the economic ripple effect of these enterprises has yielded 1.3 million new job opportunities over the past decade. MSMEDA also directed resources toward community development initiatives, generating an additional 18.9 million workdays specifically benefiting women.

This sustained financial backing aligns with broader governmental directives to transition young female graduates into self-employment and formalize micro-enterprises into scalable businesses.

Empowering Female Founders Beyond Capital

MSMEDA’s mandate extends well beyond traditional lending. Rahmy emphasized that providing capital is only one pillar of their women’s empowerment strategy, which requires robust technical and administrative support to ensure business survival and scalability.

Over the reported period, women-led projects captured 28% of the agency’s marketing services. Simultaneously, MSMEDA delivered targeted entrepreneurship development training to 56,000 women, focusing heavily on regions historically marginalized from mainstream economic development, including border governorates and Upper Egypt.

Market access remains a critical barrier for early-stage founders, a challenge MSMEDA addresses through localized e-marketing services and high-profile industry events. Female founders now account for 55% of the participants in MSMEDA-organized local exhibitions, including the agency’s flagship Turathna Exhibition for traditional and handicraft industries.
