Procurement and supply chain leaders across the Middle East are grappling with a new set of priorities as artificial intelligence, geopolitical instability, and operational risks force a modernization of their functions. These critical themes are set to be the main focus at the upcoming CIPS MENA Procurement and Supply Chain Futures Forum, a key gathering for industry professionals in the region.
Quick Facts
- 69% of professionals report procurement’s increased influence.
- Over half are actively pursuing greater automation.
- 78% see ESG issues as increasingly important.
A Strategic Shift Beyond Cost Cutting
The role of procurement is rapidly evolving from a cost-focused department to a strategic driver of business resilience and value. According to recent industry findings linked to CIPS, the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply, the function’s influence is growing within organisations, driven by pressures to manage supplier risk, improve ESG performance, and navigate ongoing supply chain disruptions.
This shift is amplified by rising geopolitical tensions and cybersecurity threats, pushing teams to prioritize supplier visibility and robust risk management strategies.
“Procurement leaders are currently navigating far more than cost pressures alone,” said Sam Achampong, Regional Director for Asia, Australasia, Middle East and Africa at CIPS. “Organisations are increasingly relying on procurement teams to strengthen resilience, manage supplier risk, support sustainability objectives and evaluate how emerging technologies such as AI can deliver long-term value.”
Achampong emphasized that technology is not a silver bullet. “AI may transform procurement processes but technology on its own will not solve supply chain risk. Organisations also need stronger supplier relationships, better visibility and more resilient procurement strategies,” he added.
Riyadh Forum to Address Regional Challenges
The upcoming forum, set to take place in Riyadh this October, will bring together leaders from government, enterprise, and major industries across MENA. Discussions will centre on the practical capabilities shaping the profession’s future, including AI-driven procurement, digital transformation, and sustainable supply chain strategies.
The event will run alongside the CIPS MENA Awards, which recognize excellence within the procurement and supply profession.
