Morocco’s startup ecosystem is expanding, with around 400,000 active companies and a growing network of support mechanisms for entrepreneurs and innovation, according to Lamia Benmakhlouf, director general of Technopark Morocco.
Speaking to Maghreb Arab Press, Benmakhlouf said micro, small and medium-sized businesses account for about 90% of active companies. She identified funding, market access and innovation as the three main pillars needed to strengthen their competitiveness.
Technopark, which opened its first site in Casablanca in 2001, now operates in Rabat, Tangier, Agadir and Essaouira. New centres are being developed in Fez, Oujda and Tiznit to extend startup support beyond Morocco’s main economic hubs.
The organisation has supported more than 3,500 technology startups over the past 25 years. According to Benmakhlouf, startups supported by Technopark have recorded a survival rate of nearly 90% five years after their creation.
The 500 startups hosted by Technopark in 2025 created around 1,700 direct jobs, while 35% exported their solutions and services to international markets.
Benmakhlouf said the next phase will focus on strategic fields including artificial intelligence, data, health technology and fintech. She added that the goal is to strengthen Morocco’s digital sovereignty and economic competitiveness.
