Google, NVIDIA and Emerald AI have launched the AI Energy Management Alliance, a group of around 20 companies working to make artificial intelligence data centers more flexible electricity users.
Announced on September 16, 2026, the alliance brings together companies from AI, energy, utilities and infrastructure. Participants include Anthropic, National Grid, AES, Constellation, NRG and RWE, alongside the three founding companies.
The initiative aims to move data centers away from operating as fixed, around-the-clock power loads. Participating facilities could reduce or shift non-urgent computing, use batteries or local generation, and preserve power for critical workloads when electricity networks are under pressure.
Google said it had integrated 1GW of demand-response capacity into long-term utility agreements in the US as of March 2026. These arrangements allow some machine-learning workloads to be shifted or reduced when needed by the grid.
NVIDIA and Emerald AI have also been developing flexible AI data centers designed to respond to grid conditions. One pilot project with Digital Realty in Virginia is expected to approach 100MW and will test whether an AI facility can adjust its electricity use while maintaining required performance.
The alliance said measurable and verifiable flexibility could help data centers secure grid connections faster and reduce the need for infrastructure built only to meet short periods of peak demand. Its success will depend on reliable performance, as well as regulatory frameworks for flexible large loads.
