A Syrian team has qualified for the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) finals in Puerto Rico with “Bakri,” a robot designed to welcome visitors and share information about Aleppo’s history, culture and heritage.
Developed by RoboTrick and the ROBONVO team, Bakri speaks the Aleppine dialect, other Syrian and Arab dialects, and 12 languages in total. It is designed for the Aleppo National Museum, where it can interact with visitors through a camera and 32-inch touchscreen, while helping the museum organise and archive its collections.
The project also includes a mobile application for booking visits and tickets and making electronic payments, as well as a management dashboard for tracking visitor numbers, nationalities, schedules and digital content. The team tested the robot with visitors and museum officials for three hours.
Bakri was created for Syria’s national robotics competition, which focused this year on using technology to preserve Syrian culture. The team said it addressed a lack of unified digital archives, a shortage of tour guides and language barriers faced by international visitors.
ROBONVO won the gold medal in the Future Innovators – Senior category, securing its place in the global finals. The team is now refining the robot’s design, user experience and autonomous navigation, while expanding its offline database and voice library across all 12 languages. The WRO finals are scheduled to take place in Puerto Rico from December 8 to 10.
