Doha-based startup OceanEdge won first place at the QSTP x YEC Summer Bootcamp and Hackathon with a prototype designed to inspect offshore pipelines and platforms without putting divers in the water.
Founded by Muhammad Rafi Abbad and his co-founder, OceanEdge began as a university senior project. Its underwater drone is designed to operate autonomously, film subsea infrastructure, assess the condition of metal and generate an inspection report.
Abbad said the 48-hour bootcamp helped the team turn a working machine into a clearer startup concept. The team refined its pitch, presentation and submission video with support from Vora, where Abbad had completed a three-month internship through the QSTP Internship Program.
“An inspection should never cost a life” became the central idea behind the project during the bootcamp, according to the QSTP-published account.
OceanEdge remains at an early stage. The prototype is working, and the team is now looking for its first pilots while exploring how to develop the project into a startup serving Qatar’s industries.
