Amazon Web Services (AWS) said it cannot restore access to some customer data and resources in its Bahrain cloud region and one availability zone in the UAE after wartime damage to its facilities.
The company said it had “exhausted every option” for Bahrain-based data that customers had not moved before the region became unavailable. Damage affected several availability zones and exceeded what AWS services were designed to withstand.
In the UAE, access remains unavailable for data hosted exclusively in availability zone mec1-az2. Recovery work is continuing in the wider UAE region and in two other affected zones, mec1-az1 and mec1-az3. AWS said it is replacing damaged infrastructure and expects to provide an update on Emirati services in the coming months. Its next Bahrain update is due in early 2027.
Most customers in both countries have restored operations elsewhere by using backups, copying accessible data or adopting alternative arrangements, according to AWS.
The disruption began after facilities in Bahrain and the UAE were damaged during the conflict, causing outages across banking, fintech and other digital services. The incident has renewed questions about the resilience of cloud infrastructure designed primarily for isolated failures rather than damage across multiple facilities.
