Egypt is preparing to launch what it describes as Africa’s first virtual hospital in Ismailia, connecting healthcare facilities nationwide through telemedicine, artificial intelligence and remote clinical services.
The facility will operate as a digital healthcare hub rather than a conventional hospital with patient wards. Doctors will be able to review diagnostic tests and medical images remotely, provide specialist consultations and support treatment decisions without patients travelling to major centres.
According to the General Authority for Healthcare, the hospital will include 119 digital and operational units. These include electronic triage, telecardiology, teleradiology, virtual outpatient clinics, remote emergency services, virtual intensive care and command-and-control centres.
AI will support medical triage, patient management and chronic disease monitoring through real-time vital-sign tracking. The platform will also enable multidisciplinary case discussions, remote consultations for critically ill patients and digital training for healthcare professionals.
The initiative forms part of Egypt’s healthcare reform agenda and its efforts to expand universal health coverage. The authority also plans an international training programme for Egyptian doctors at specialised medical centres abroad, aimed at strengthening access to highly specialised expertise and reducing the cost of serving remote areas.
