Google Rolls Out Gemini AI to Millions of Cars, Upgrading In-Vehicle Assistant

4 Min Read

Google is rolling out its Gemini AI to vehicles with Google built-in, replacing the current Google Assistant with a more powerful, conversational system. The move signals a major push to integrate advanced AI directly into the driving experience.

Quick Facts

  • Replaces current Google Assistant in cars.
  • Rollout starts in the U.S. with English.
  • Available for new and compatible existing vehicles.

From Assistant to AI Companion

The announcement comes just after General Motors revealed it would bring Gemini to around 4 million of its vehicles from model year 2022 and later, including Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC brands. However, Google’s latest update is broader, suggesting Gemini will be available to all automakers that use its built-in system.

The rollout will begin in the U.S., with plans to expand over the next few months. Importantly, the upgrade isn’t limited to new cars; owners of existing compatible vehicles will receive it through a software update. Drivers with a signed-in Google account will get a prompt to enable the new AI, which can be activated using voice commands, the steering wheel, or the on-screen microphone.

What Can Gemini Do Behind the Wheel?

The upgrade enables more natural and complex interactions. Drivers can make detailed requests, such as asking Gemini to find a “highly rated sit-down restaurant with outdoor seating” along their current route. The AI can then use Google Maps data to provide options and answer follow-up questions about parking or menu details.

Beyond navigation and search, Gemini can control vehicle functions like activating the heat, suggest music, retrieve vehicle information, and summarize incoming messages for hands-free replies.

Google is also testing Gemini Live, a beta feature that allows for more open-ended conversations. Activated by saying, “Hey Google, let’s talk,” it allows drivers to brainstorm ideas or have general discussions while on the road.

Relevance for MENA’s Automotive Tech Scene

While the initial launch is U.S.-only, Google’s plan to expand language and regional support makes this a significant development for the MENA market. As smart vehicle adoption accelerates, particularly in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, advanced in-car AI assistants are becoming a key differentiator for automakers.

The future integration of Gemini with services like Google Calendar and Gmail could streamline productivity for busy professionals in regional hubs like Dubai and Riyadh. For the local auto-tech industry, this sets a new benchmark for user experience, potentially influencing everything from third-party app development to the features offered by regional car manufacturers and distributors. The eventual addition of Arabic language support will be critical for mass adoption in the region.
