Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Investment Company is considering investing up to ¥1 trillion ($6.3B) to develop a 500-megawatt AI data centre in Japan’s Akita Prefecture, according to Bloomberg.
The project would be led by Mubadala and could include additional foreign and Japanese investors, Bloomberg reported, citing a person familiar with the matter who was not authorised to speak publicly.
The potential investment would add to Mubadala’s growing global portfolio across data centres and AI infrastructure. Its previous investments include a stake of up to $500M in North American operator Cologix, a $350M investment in Princeton Digital Group, and participation in Aligned Data Centers alongside Macquarie Asset Management.
Mubadala is also a founding partner of MGX, the Abu Dhabi technology investment company focused on AI infrastructure, semiconductors and core AI technologies. The fund has described data centres, fibre networks, semiconductors and power as central to its technology strategy.
