OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT for Teens, a version of its AI chatbot designed for users aged 13 to 17, with additional safety features and parental controls.
The teen-focused experience activates automatically when OpenAI estimates that a user is under 18 or when the user identifies as being between 13 and 17. The company said it aims to support critical thinking and encourage teenagers to seek real-world support when needed.
The launch comes as AI companies face growing scrutiny over the risks of chatbots, including concerns about their use for emotional and mental health support. OpenAI is also facing multiple lawsuits alleging that ChatGPT harmed children, according to the announcement.
ChatGPT for Teens includes study mode, homework reminders designed to discourage users from bypassing assignments, quizzes, learning visualizations and tools for setting dedicated study hours.
Parents can link their accounts, set “Quiet Hours” and manage selected settings. OpenAI said they may also receive alerts in high-risk situations, including notifications related to eating disorders.
