Qatar Science & Technology Park And Merck Launch Landmark FemTech Accelerator With Global Cohort

4 Min Read

Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP), in partnership with global healthcare leader Merck, has officially commenced its first multi-country FemTech Accelerator. The program kicked off its introductory week following a massive global recruitment drive that saw 240 applications from 47 countries. Designed to bridge the historical gap in women’s health innovation, the accelerator brings together founders, clinical partners, and research institutions to transform high-potential ideas into validated medical solutions ready for real-world deployment.

A Global Pipeline Led By Female Founders

The inaugural cohort reflects a significant shift in the demographic of healthtech leadership, with 71% of the applicant startups being female-led. While the program has a strong international footprint—drawing 24.6% of applications from Europe and 15.8% from North America—it remains deeply rooted in the regional ecosystem. Thirty-three percent of applications originated from the West Asia and North Africa (WANA) region, including 24 startups based directly in Qatar. This diversity positions the accelerator as a strategic bridge between global technological innovation and the specific healthcare needs of the Middle East.

From Digital Health To Deep Tech Diagnostics

The accelerator targets critical and underserved areas of women’s health. The 40 founders selected for Phase I are working on solutions across a broad spectrum, including reproductive health, fertility, maternal care, and mental health. A significant portion of the innovation focuses on “deep tech” applications, such as AI-driven diagnostics, biomarker detection for non-communicable diseases, and advanced medical devices. The program’s curriculum is structured to move these founders beyond theoretical concepts, focusing instead on commercialization, impact measurement, and technical validation.

Strategic Integration With Qatar’s Healthcare Ecosystem

One of the accelerator’s primary differentiators is its direct link to Qatar’s premier medical institutions. During the opening sessions, founders engaged with key partners including Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Sidra Medicine, and Weill Cornell Medicine–Qatar. These partnerships are vital for Phase II of the program, where a narrowed selection of startups will move into pilot development. By testing solutions in real-world clinical settings under the guidance of local experts, the program ensures that the technology developed is not only impressive but also builds the necessary trust required for healthcare adoption.

Building A Sustainable Hub For FemTech

The partnership between QSTP and Merck signals Qatar’s ambition to become a global hub for FemTech, an industry projected to exceed $600 billion by 2030. By providing startups with access to a dedicated Free Zone, the Tech Venture Fund, and a network of clinical stakeholders, QSTP is creating a sustainable environment for healthcare scale-ups. As Rama Chakaki, President of QSTP, noted, the quality of applications highlights a clear opportunity to address critical gaps in innovation, ensuring that women’s health remains a central pillar of the Qatar National Vision 2030.
