Meta Bolsters User Security With New Scam Detection Tools Across Its Platforms

4 Min Read

Meta has announced a significant push to enhance user safety by rolling out a suite of new scam detection tools across its core platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger. The new features are designed to proactively alert users to potentially malicious activity before they engage with suspicious accounts or content.

Proactive Alerts on Facebook and WhatsApp

On Facebook, the company is testing new alerts for suspicious friend requests. When a user sends or receives a request from an account exhibiting red flags—such as having very few mutual friends or a listed location in a different country—a pop-up will prompt them to review the request carefully. This serves as an early warning system to help users decide whether to accept or block the connection.

For WhatsApp, Meta is targeting device-linking scams. A new feature will issue a warning when a request to link a user’s WhatsApp account to a new device appears suspicious based on behavioral signals. This directly counters tactics where scammers trick users into scanning a QR code or entering a linking code on a malicious website, which would give the scammer access to the user’s account. The alert will show where the request originated, providing crucial context.

AI-Powered Scam Reviews for Messenger

Messenger is seeing an expansion of its advanced scam detection feature to more countries. When a user initiates a chat with a new contact and the conversation contains patterns commonly associated with scams, like unsolicited job offers, Meta will display a warning. Users will then have the option to share recent messages for an AI-powered scam review. If the tool confirms a scam, it will advise the user to block or report the account and provide educational information on common scam tactics.

Relevance for the MENA Region

With some of the highest social media and messaging app penetration rates globally, the MENA region is a prime target for digital scams. The widespread use of WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger for both personal and commercial communication makes users particularly vulnerable. These new tools from Meta are highly relevant for the region’s founders, VCs, and tech professionals, as they can help protect not only individual users but also the integrity of businesses operating on these platforms. By reducing the success rate of phishing, impersonation, and financial scams, these features can foster a safer digital environment, which is crucial for the continued growth of the region’s digital economy.

Meta’s Ongoing War on Scams

This initiative is part of Meta’s broader strategy to combat fraudulent activity. The company disclosed that in the last year alone, it removed over 159 million scam ads, with a remarkable 92% being taken down proactively before any user reports. Furthermore, Meta removed 10.9 million accounts across Facebook and Instagram that were linked to organized criminal scam centers, demonstrating a large-scale effort to dismantle malicious networks.
