Egyptian sustainability startup CycleX has been crowned the first-place winner of the Climate Leaders program, emerging as the top venture from a competitive pool of over 450 climate-focused companies. The milestone, supported by Edafa Venture Capital, highlights the startup’s significant impact on Egypt’s burgeoning circular economy. The competition was organized in collaboration with several high-level entities, including the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Social Solidarity, and the National Council for Women.
Transforming Household Waste Into Instant Value
CycleX operates a digital marketplace that allows users to monetize household clutter and recyclable materials. Through its mobile application, users can sell various types of waste, including:
- Scrap Metal and Old Appliances: Turning unused machinery and household items into immediate cash.
- Paper and Cardboard: Facilitating the collection of packaging materials for industrial reuse.
- Plastics and Recyclables: Reducing environmental footprints by ensuring plastics enter the correct recycling streams.
The platform distinguishes itself by offering a secure home pickup service, directly addressing the logistical barriers that often hinder domestic recycling efforts in urban Egyptian environments.
A Multi-Stakeholder Support System
The victory at the Climate Leaders competition was bolstered by a broad coalition of national and international partners. Key supporters recognized for their role in the journey include the Governor of Cairo, the Youth Leaders Foundation (YLF), and Telecom Egypt (WE). Additionally, international organizations such as UNICEF Egypt and the European Union have been instrumental in fostering the ecosystem that allows impact-driven startups like CycleX to scale their operations.
Driving Egypt’s Green Future
CycleX’s growth is part of a wider national movement toward a “Green Egypt,” supported by government ministries and private venture capital. By providing a financial incentive for waste management—marketed under the slogan “Make your home’s clutter your gain”—the startup is successfully shifting consumer behavior toward more sustainable practices. As an Edafa Venture Capital portfolio company, CycleX is positioned to utilize its recent recognition to expand its logistics network and increase its footprint across the Egyptian governorates.
