Egypt Breaks Ground on Sungrow Energy Storage Plant in Ain Sokhna

Egypt has laid the foundation stone for the Sungrow Power Suez plant, which is expected to become the first dedicated energy storage systems manufacturing facility in the Middle East and Africa.

The plant is being built within the Egypt-China TEDA Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone in Ain Sokhna. It will manufacture advanced battery energy storage systems, supporting Egypt’s efforts to localize clean-energy technologies and expand its industrial partnership with China.

According to the announcement, Egyptian Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem said the facility should help improve national grid stability and enable the integration of a larger share of renewable energy.

He also said the project could support technology and expertise transfer, develop Egyptian talent and encourage the growth of local feeder industries. Hashem called on Sungrow to increase the plant’s local component ratio and deepen cooperation with Egyptian institutions and research centres.

The project forms part of Egypt’s broader industrial strategy, which identifies equipment and components for solar and other renewable-energy technologies as a priority enabling industry.

Construction and equipment installation are expected to follow the agreed timeline, with operations targeted to begin next year, the minister said.
