OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Plug-ins With App-Like Interfaces and Automations

2 Min Read

OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT plug-ins with dedicated app-like experiences, interactive panels and event-based automations that let users work with connected tools directly inside conversations.

The company announced the updates at its DevDay presentation, saying developers can now create plug-in extensions with a dedicated home in ChatGPT’s sidebar. Existing plug-ins connect ChatGPT with tools including Slack, SharePoint, Airtable and Google Drive.

The new extensions can include interactive panels and file viewers that support the formats used by each developer’s product. OpenAI said it is also introducing a Plugin Creator tool and a redesigned submission process for its plug-in directory.

The company has updated how plug-ins are ranked and recommended, including when they appear in conversations. Users can also approve a plug-in’s access requirements individually.

ChatGPT Sites, which allow users to build lightweight websites, will also support the extensions. This could allow people to share apps with colleagues, who can use them with their own connected data and permissions, according to the announcement.

OpenAI is additionally adding support for the proposed MCP Events specification, enabling plug-ins to trigger automations based on events in connected applications. The company said it is also simplifying how users add and manage automations.
