Sam Altman Says UAE is the World’s Most Forward-Looking Country on AI

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described the UAE as the world’s most forward-looking country for artificial intelligence adoption during a panel at ADIPEC 2026 in Abu Dhabi.

Altman discussed agreements involving OpenAI, ADNOC and G42, saying the partnership could help reshape energy operations through AI. According to the company, the technology could also support efforts to address complex challenges in energy production and scientific research.

He said AI is already changing how people work, with tools such as ChatGPT helping users complete tasks more efficiently. Some workers are also beginning to use AI as a colleague or team member.

Altman said the technology’s potential for scientific discovery was particularly significant, pointing to recent examples of AI systems addressing mathematical problems that had previously resisted solutions.

He added that the energy needed for individual AI queries is declining as systems become more efficient, even as lower costs encourage wider use. Altman said he hoped AI applications in the energy sector would deliver enough value to offset their own energy consumption and help expand global energy availability.

On employment, he said AI can already perform parts of some white-collar roles, but argued that societies can adapt. He also stressed the importance of human creativity, judgement and control over decisions affecting people’s futures.
