Abu Dhabi-based Core42, a provider of sovereign cloud and high-performance computing, is significantly increasing its US presence by tripling the size of its data center in Buffalo, New York. The move signals a major push by the G42-owned company to secure the critical computing power needed for the global artificial intelligence race.
Quick Facts
- Buffalo facility expanding from 18MW to 60MW.
- Adding Nvidia chips alongside existing AMD systems.
- Targets over 100MW of global capacity in 2026.
Securing Global Compute for a National Strategy
The expansion will boost the Lake Mariner facility’s capacity from 18 megawatts to 60MW, enough to support thousands of advanced chips used for training large language models and other AI applications. The upgrade introduces Nvidia infrastructure to the site, giving customers access to both of the dominant platforms in the AI hardware market.
This international growth is directly tied to the UAE’s strategic goals in artificial intelligence, according to Sherif Tawfik, chief business officer at Core42.
“Overseas facilities are not separate from our UAE AI ambitions – they are a key part of enabling them,” Tawfik explained. “As the UAE positions itself as a global AI hub, the underlying infrastructure has to be global and scalable to serve customers across jurisdictions.”
G42’s Infrastructure Powerhouse
Core42 has become a key player in the UAE’s tech ecosystem, providing cloud and computing services to government and enterprise clients. As a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi technology group G42, the company is central to its parent’s expansion plans.
To fuel this growth, Core42 recently secured $550 million in trade finance facilities from HSBC. The funding is aimed at accelerating its global build-out as demand for AI infrastructure continues to climb.
The Buffalo site is already home to “Maximus,” a supercomputer powered by AMD that is ranked among the world’s 20 most powerful systems. Lake Mariner is part of a wider network with facilities across the US in Dallas, Sunnyvale, Stockton, and Minneapolis, as well as European headquarters in Dublin and operations in Italy and France.
Meeting the Demand for Production-Scale AI
The competition for processors, data centers, and energy has become a defining battleground in the AI sector. As organizations shift from testing AI concepts to deploying them in live operations, their infrastructure needs are changing.
“As organisations move beyond experimentation and begin deploying AI across enterprise and national-scale operations, they require access to high-performance, scalable compute capacity,” Tawfik said.
He added that customers are now prioritizing resilience, governance, and cost efficiency, signaling a maturing market. “Disciplined scaling will be one of the defining factors for AI infrastructure providers over the next few years.”
