How Morocco’s AH Digital is Industrializing AI Automation for SMEs

5 Min Read

Founded by a French-Moroccan industrial expert who returned to his home country, Agadir-based AH Digital is on a mission to make artificial intelligence a practical lever for growth among Moroccan Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). Operating from the Technopark Agadir incubator, the startup is championing a grounded approach to digital transformation, focusing on automating core processes to boost SME competitiveness.

Quick Facts

  • Founder: Hassan Ahlaou, an industrial sector veteran.
  • Focus: Integrating AI and automation into SME workflows.
  • Base: Souss-Massa Innovation City, Agadir, Morocco.

An Industrial Vision for Moroccan Tech

Hassan Ahlaou’s journey began in France, where he gained deep experience in precision-driven sectors like automotive, construction, and railway manufacturing. “These experiences exposed me to a tangible reality: many companies waste precious time due to inadequate workflows,” Ahlaou explained.

A speech by King Mohammed VI, calling on the Moroccan diaspora to contribute to the country’s development, served as a turning point. Ahlaou returned to Morocco with a clear objective: to apply his industrial expertise to benefit local businesses. This led to the creation of AH Digital, a company that now helps businesses integrate AI and automation into their core operations, developing solutions in weeks that once took months.

Beyond ChatGPT: Integrating AI into Core Operations

While many businesses equate AI with tools like ChatGPT, Ahlaou clarifies that this is a limited view. “ChatGPT is just a tool. The real value lies in its integration into professional workflows,” he stated.

AH Digital’s approach involves a deep analysis of a company’s processes, from sales and customer service to HR and production. The goal is to automate specific tasks, connect existing tools, and leverage real-time data. The startup develops custom AI agents tailored to each business function. “Unlike a traditional chatbot, these agents can understand a price quote, generate documents, interact with a CRM system, or monitor for anomalies,” Ahlaou noted.

Building a Tech Hub in Souss-Massa

While Casablanca and Rabat remain Morocco’s primary tech hubs, Ahlaou believes Agadir holds significant untapped potential. The Souss-Massa Innovation City, managed by Technopark Morocco, is helping to structure a local ecosystem that is nurturing new talent and innovative startups.

“I believe Souss-Massa can become a strategic technology hub, especially thanks to its key sectors: agriculture, tourism, logistics, food processing, and fishing,” Ahlaou said. “These are areas where AI can deliver rapid and very tangible gains.” The main challenge, he adds, is improving connections between startups, established companies, and investors.

The Technopark has been instrumental for AH Digital, providing networking opportunities and access to international forums like Vivatech in Paris.

Overcoming SME Hesitation Towards Digital Transformation

For years, many Moroccan SMEs have discussed digital transformation without taking concrete action. According to Ahlaou, this is due to a mix of cost concerns, a skills gap, and company culture, but the primary obstacle is a fear of change.

“Many managers still see digitization as a cost, whereas today it is an essential bet on competitiveness,” he argued. “Many companies still confuse a digital presence with digital transformation. True transformation primarily concerns internal processes, data management, and productivity.”

AH Digital’s role is to guide this transition with tangible, measurable, and profitable solutions in the short term.

Automation and the Future of Work

Addressing concerns that automation eliminates jobs, Ahlaou explained that in most cases, it transforms roles rather than erasing them. The primary goal is to handle repetitive, low-value tasks like manual data entry, follow-ups, and time-consuming administrative processes. “This allows teams to focus on more strategic tasks, such as customer relations, analysis, and decision-making,” he said.

In one case, AH Digital helped a Moroccan industrial company avoid significant financial losses. By implementing an automated data analysis system, the startup was able to detect operational anomalies in real-time, preventing critical incidents that would have caused costly shutdowns.
