Oman is expanding its technical standards programme to cover artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, renewable energy, logistics and tourism as technology reshapes products and services.
More than 80% of the projects in the Directorate General of Standards and Metrology’s 2026 plan were completed by the end of the second quarter, according to the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion.
The directorate is preparing and reviewing around 1,567 draft unified GCC standards, including about 325 projects prepared by Oman and 16 draft national standards.
New proposals include GCC standards for the environmental sustainability of AI systems and data quality for analytics and machine learning. Other projects address wind-power asset management, cold-chain logistics, storage and transportation, as well as environmental guidelines for accommodation providers and information standards for adventure tourism.
Oman has also adopted 10 international standards covering electric vehicle charging systems, renewable energy systems, transformer safety and industrial internet applications.
More than 170 representatives from government, regulators, private companies, universities and research institutions participate in the technical committees. The programme also covers products specific to Oman, including frankincense oil, distilled frankincense water and fishing boats under 14 metres.
