Why Replit’s Jordanian Founder Amjad Masad Is Choosing Independence Over A Buyout

5 Min Read

As the AI industry buzzes with rumors of rival Cursor being acquired by SpaceX for a reported $60 billion, Jordanian founder Amjad Masad is making it clear that his AI coding assistant company, Replit, is on a different path. During a recent event, Masad discussed the company’s explosive growth, its commitment to independence, and its readiness to take on Apple in a contentious App Store dispute.

Quick Facts

  • Net revenue retention reaches as high as 300%.
  • Gross margin positive for over a year.
  • Company is charting a path toward a billion-dollar run rate.
  • Contests Apple’s App Store block in potential legal fight.

The Independence Play

With the AI space consolidating, the question of selling is unavoidable. However, Masad was firm about Replit’s future, contrasting its financial health with competitors. He pointed to reports that Cursor operates at negative 23% gross margins, making it “incredibly hard to stay independent.”

Replit, by contrast, has been gross margin positive for over a year. “We’ve been able to run the business more rationally,” Masad explained. “We’re going to try to stay independent. I would love for us to remain an independent company.”

He attributes this viability to a decade of building a full-stack platform that serves a unique audience. “Our audience tends to be mostly non-technical users who previously haven’t been able to create any software,” he said. “We provide an end-to-end platform — from the prompt all the way to a deployed application that can scale.”

Winning on Product and Security

When competing for enterprise deals with clients like Zillow and Meta, Masad says Replit’s product-led growth is a key advantage. Even when features are matched, the company’s security model often seals the deal.

Because Replit is a full-stack platform with its database built directly into projects, it offers inherent security advantages over tools that connect to external, public-facing databases.

“We also spent 10 years battling crypto scammers and hackers, so our cybersecurity function is as good as a dedicated cybersecurity startup,” Masad added. “Every time you deploy an app on Replit, we create an entirely new isolated project on Google Cloud. We inherit Google’s security model.”

This focus on a secure, integrated environment has led to remarkably low churn and high net retention, with some customers expanding their spending by 300%.

A Contentious Battle with Apple

Replit has found itself in “App Store purgatory,” with Apple blocking updates for months. Masad believes this isn’t a technical issue but a strategic one, suggesting Apple feels threatened by the number of iOS apps being built and submitted through Replit’s platform.

Apple’s official reason is that Replit violates guidelines by downloading new code to a device after the approval process.

Masad’s response was blunt: “That’s a lie. And we can prove it in court if we have to.”

While he hopes to avoid a legal battle, stating he would “love to collaborate” with Apple, he emphasized that a platform with a billion users cannot make “discriminatory” decisions based on whims.

Fueling a New Generation of Startups

The ecosystem growing on Replit is a testament to its mission of creating a billion software creators. Masad highlighted the success of entrepreneurs on the platform, some of whom he has personally invested in.

He cited Magic School, an AI app for teachers built by a founder who learned to code on Replit, which generated $20 million in its first year.

“The entrepreneurship happening on Replit right now is genuinely exciting,” Masad said. With transactions through its Stripe integration growing by triple digits month-over-month, he noted, “Pretty soon, our customers will be making more revenue than we are.”
