Construction on Dubai’s $154M High-Speed Loop Tunnel Network Officially Kicks Off

3 Min Read

Work has officially started on the Dubai Loop, the anticipated high-speed underground transport network developed by Elon Musk’s The Boring Company in collaboration with the Dubai government. The project, which recently entered its foundation-laying stage, aims to dramatically cut down travel times between key city hubs by moving passengers through a network of subterranean tunnels.

Quick Facts

  • Initial Investment: Dh565 million ($153.85 million)
  • Pilot Route: 6.4km connecting DIFC and Dubai Mall
  • Capacity: Up to 30,000 passengers per day

Initial Phase Requires 45,000 Tonnes of Concrete

The Boring Company signaled the start of construction by sharing an image on social media showing its team on-site, with a massive stack of concrete segments and the Burj Khalifa visible in the background.

The firm revealed the project’s massive scale, noting that the first stage alone will use 25,000 precast concrete pieces, with a combined weight of 45,000 tonnes. This initial 6.4km phase is the first step towards a full network planned to extend up to 24km, featuring 19 stations that will link the Dubai World Trade Centre and the financial district with Business Bay.

How the People-Mover System Aims to Bypass Congestion

The Dubai Loop is engineered as a people-mover system, not a road for private vehicles. The model focuses on solving first- and last-mile transit challenges by completely bypassing surface-level traffic.

Passengers will book trips at designated stations and be transported in electric vehicles through dedicated tunnels. These vehicles will operate independently using an automated system, delivering users directly to their destination station without any stops. The tunnels, which have a diameter of 3.6 metres, are a closed system and will not be accessible to the general road network.

Slashing a 20-Minute Commute to Just Three Minutes

The project’s primary objective is a drastic reduction in inner-city travel times. The initial 6.4-kilometre pilot route connecting the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) to Dubai Mall is expected to cut the journey time from over 20 minutes to approximately three minutes.

This first route is projected to accommodate around 13,000 passengers daily. Once the full network is operational, total capacity is expected to reach about 30,000 passengers per day, offering a significant alternative to road travel for commuters in Dubai’s busiest districts.

About Dubai Loop

The Dubai Loop is a high-speed, underground public transportation system being built in Dubai. A partnership between the Dubai government and The Boring Company, it will use autonomous electric vehicles in a network of tunnels to move passengers between key economic zones, aiming to alleviate road congestion and shorten travel times significantly.
