NASA has selected Tunisian engineer and space scientist Dr Mehdi Benna to lead LEMS, a project focused on monitoring the lunar environment, particularly around the Moon’s south pole, according to the announcement.
The project is part of NASA’s Artemis program and uses scientific instruments to track seismic activity on the lunar surface. The data will help researchers study vibrations caused by moonquakes and meteorite impacts, while improving understanding of the Moon’s internal structure and the conditions future human missions may encounter.
LEMS is designed to operate autonomously on the Moon. It can generate power, run scientific operations and transmit data back to Earth, making it a tool for continued lunar research.
Benna began his academic career in Tunisia, studying electrical engineering and radio-wave communications at the National Engineering School of Tunis. He later pursued space science studies in France and went on to contribute to international research and space missions involving the Moon and Mars, as well as NASA projects. His work includes research, publications and participation in international scientific conferences.
