Anthropic has launched Claude Opus 5, a new AI model aimed at software development, office work and other knowledge-intensive tasks. The company said it delivers capabilities close to its more powerful Fable 5 model at about half the price.

Released on July 24, Opus 5 is available across Anthropic’s platforms and is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, the same rates as its predecessor, Opus 4.8. It is also the default model for Claude Max and the strongest model available on Claude Pro.

According to Anthropic, Opus 5 outperformed other models on several coding, business automation and computer-use evaluations. The company also reported improvements in scientific research tasks, including organic chemistry and protein analysis.

Anthropic said its testing found Opus 5 less capable than Fable 5 of exploiting cybersecurity vulnerabilities and less vulnerable to being manipulated into misuse. As a result, it said the model can operate with less restrictive safeguards, while still blocking activities such as exploit generation and penetration testing.

Developers can access Opus 5 through the Claude API using the model identifier claude-opus-5. Anthropic is also introducing faster execution and automatic API fallbacks for flagged requests.
