Meta Challenges Reddit With New Forum App for Facebook Groups

4 Min Read

Meta has quietly released a new standalone app called “Forum” for Facebook Groups, creating a dedicated space for community discussions that directly competes with platforms like Reddit. The company describes the app as a place for “deeper discussions, real answers and communities you care about.”

Quick Facts

  • New standalone app for Facebook Groups.
  • Functions similarly to community platform Reddit.
  • Features AI-powered search and admin tools.

A Familiar Playbook

The new app, first spotted by social media consultant Matt Navarra, integrates directly with a user’s existing Facebook profile. Upon signing in, Forum loads all your groups, profile details, and activity. While it mirrors Facebook Groups, it allows users to post with a nickname, adding a layer of anonymity similar to Reddit.

Meta has clarified that existing groups will remain on Facebook, and any content shared on Forum will also be visible within the corresponding group on the main Facebook app. The company claims Forum’s feeds prioritize conversations, helping users see “what real people are saying, not just what’s trending.”

This is not Meta’s first attempt at a dedicated Groups app. The company launched a similar product in 2014 but discontinued it in 2017.

AI at the Core

A key feature of Forum is its integration of AI. The app includes an “Ask” tab powered by AI that compiles answers to user questions by pulling information from discussions across various groups.

Additionally, an AI assistant is available for group administrators to help with management and content moderation tasks, potentially simplifying the often-complex job of running large online communities.

Meta’s App Proliferation Strategy

Forum is the latest product in a broader company strategy to launch more standalone apps. Last month, Meta rolled out Instants, an app for sharing disappearing photos that borrows heavily from BeReal and Snapchat.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has encouraged this new direction, telling employees that AI-driven efficiencies enable the company to build more products faster. Zuckerberg reportedly questioned whether Meta could build 50 new apps, suggesting a new era of rapid experimentation for the social media giant, even if many of these apps are variations of existing popular services.

Relevance for MENA’s Digital Communities

For the MENA region, where platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and local forums host vibrant digital communities, Meta’s new app presents an interesting development. Facebook Groups are already a primary tool for community organizing, professional networking, and consumer discussions across the Arab world.

Forum could offer these communities a more focused, less cluttered environment, potentially increasing engagement. However, it also introduces another platform for users to manage. For MENA-based startups building community-focused tech, Forum represents new competition from a global heavyweight with the power to integrate its massive existing user base seamlessly. The success of Forum in the region will depend on whether users see enough value to adopt another Meta-branded app.

About Meta

Meta builds technologies that help people connect, find communities, and grow businesses. Its portfolio of products includes Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Meta Quest. The company is focused on developing the metaverse, a set of virtual spaces where people can create and explore with others who aren’t in the same physical space.
