Syria’s Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency has discussed cooperation with the European Union and the French Development Agency (AFD) to strengthen support for small businesses and startups.
Agency director Ehab Zakour met with Libor Khlad, head of cooperation at the EU Delegation to Syria, and representatives of AFD to explore ways to improve operating models for SMEs and startups, according to the agency.
The discussions focused on three areas: building the agency’s capabilities, supporting SMEs and startups and improving their sustainability, and expanding trade links with European companies and markets.
The participants also reviewed ways to develop business models and support programs that could help Syrian businesses expand, remain resilient and access international markets.
The meeting included officials from Syria’s Ministry of Economy and Industry, as well as EU representatives responsible for trade and private-sector programs.
Zakour previously said that SMEs account for more than 80% of Syria’s economic structure, highlighting their strategic importance to the country’s economy.
