Network-Level Protection for Families
The launch of the “Etmaen” and “Etmaen Ala El Akher” services marks a key development in Egypt’s digital safety agenda. Unveiled at a ceremony with Minister of Communications and Information Technology Raafat Hendy, the services are designed to offer a simplified way for parents to manage their children’s online experience on mobile devices without needing technical expertise.
The core of the initiative is to embed safeguards directly into the mobile network. The standard “Etmaen” service automatically blocks access to harmful and age-inappropriate content, enforces safe search on major engines, and protects against websites known for malware and other cyber threats. The content classifications are aligned with standards from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
For parents seeking stricter controls, the “Etmaen Ala El Akher” service includes all the features of the standard package while adding restrictions on social media websites and applications.
A Public-Private Push for Digital Trust
This initiative highlights a collaborative effort between the Ministry, the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), and private sector players including Orange Egypt, e& Egypt, Telecom Egypt, Vodafone Egypt, Kidzonet, and Cyshield. By integrating these safety features directly into telecom services, the government is moving beyond awareness campaigns to provide practical, accessible tools for families.
Parents who own the SIM card can subscribe to either service through the retail stores or mobile apps of any of the four participating mobile operators. This approach ensures the protective measures are widely available across Egypt’s extensive mobile network infrastructure, reflecting a growing focus on digital trust as internet use continues to expand.
For the telecom sector, this launch signals an expanding role for operators in delivering value-added digital safety services. As online protection becomes a greater policy concern globally, such offerings could become standard for family-oriented mobile plans.
