Around 50 young people took part in the Green Solutions Lab in Tartous, Syria, an initiative focused on turning environmental ideas into sustainable projects.

The event was organised by Startup Syria and the Reco Youth Foundation, with support from the Aga Khan Foundation, and held at the Royal Inn Hotel. It introduced participants to green entrepreneurship and encouraged them to view challenges such as coastal pollution, water scarcity, desertification and waste management as opportunities for innovation.

Event coordinator George Nasr said the organisers plan to provide training and support for promising ideas, with the aim of developing at least four projects in the next phase.

Ideas presented during the event included recycling plastic waste with resin to produce products and furniture, using rooftops for agriculture, developing insulation materials to reduce energy consumption, and creating environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic bags.

The discussions also highlighted community initiatives in tree planting, recycling and women’s empowerment. Participants said the projects could help address local environmental challenges while creating income opportunities and supporting sustainable economic recovery.

The event formed part of activities linked to Global Entrepreneurship Week and focused on strengthening youth participation in local economic activity through environmental innovation.
