The Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center at Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University has wrapped up the first edition of its “Sahabat Al-Imam” incubator program, graduating 11 startups and establishing a new model for academic-led venture building by taking equity stakes in each company. The program culminated in a final showcase where the new ventures pitched to investors and potential partners.
Quick Facts
- 11 startups graduated and received partnership contracts.
- The university acquired equity in all graduating companies.
- The program began with 172 initial project applications.
A Multi-Stage Funnel for Startup Creation
Developed in partnership with SEA Ventures, the program was designed as a comprehensive journey to transform early-stage ideas from students, faculty, and alumni into investment-ready businesses. The process began with a three-day competition that attracted 172 projects, filtering the most promising 50 to move forward.
These teams then entered an intensive five-day bootcamp focused on business model development and idea validation. The bootcamp included over 20 hours of specialized training and more than 100 mentorship sessions, resulting in the selection of 25 projects for the final incubation phase.
Inside the Six-Month Incubation
The final 11 startups that emerged from the bootcamp underwent a six-month incubation period. During this time, they received extensive technical, administrative, and advisory support to accelerate their growth.
The support framework was substantial, featuring over 560 consulting sessions, 170 one-on-one mentoring meetings, and 9 specialized workshops led by 12 experts in business, investment, and tech development. This hands-on guidance helped the startups develop their products, achieve market readiness, enter regulatory sandboxes, file patents, and secure their first users.
University as an Equity Partner
In a move that aligns the university’s success with that of its startups, the institution has taken equity stakes in all 11 graduating companies. This model positions the university not just as an educational provider but as a direct investment partner, creating a sustainable relationship and a vested interest in the long-term growth of the ventures it helps create.
The program concluded with a final demo day, providing a platform for the startups to present their achievements and connect with investors and strategic partners to secure funding and drive future expansion, contributing to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals for a knowledge-based economy.
